Catholic Teens 5-22-07

Hey All—

As many of you know, Pope Benedict was in Brazil earlier this month. One of the first things he did, was meet with the young people. Below is what he had to say to them. There’s lots of great stuff here—and it applies to you as much as to the young people in Brazil. As the pope says, you have much to offer the world, your youthfulness is a treasure, and you are called to be apostles to your fellow youth!

Pope to Youth: The Church Needs YouSays Christ Is Calling Them to Be Saints SÃO PAULO, Brazil, MAY 10, 2007 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI's first full day in Brazil included a meeting with young people where he touched on themes as varied as protecting the environment and saintliness. The Pope arrived to Brazil on Wednesday for an apostolic trip that includes Sunday's opening of the 5th General Conference of the Episcopate of Latin America and the Caribbean. The Holy Father spoke with youth today, basing his discourse on the Gospel passage of the rich young man who asks Jesus how he can inherit eternal life. After Christ tells him to sell what he has and "come follow me," the youth goes away sad. The Pontiff said: "The question in the Gospel does not regard only the future. "On the contrary, it exists as a task in the present, in the 'here' and 'now,'" the Holy Father said. "In short, the young man's question raises the issue of life's meaning. … [W]hat must I do so that my life is not wasted? "Jesus alone can give us the answer, because he alone can guarantee us eternal life. He alone, therefore, can show us the meaning of this present life and give it fullness." Apostles of youth Benedict XVI told the young people that Jesus' answer lies in the affirmation of the goodness of God. "To understand what is good, we need help, which the Church offers us on many occasions, especially through catechesis," the Pope explained. "Whoever keeps the commandments is on the way that leads to God. And you, young people of Brazil and Latin America, have you already discovered what is good? Do you follow the Lord's commandments?

Hey All—

Here is a wonderful quote from St. Francis de Sales.
Jesus is the teacher of holiness. I go to Him because I want Him to teach me how to become a Saint. Of what use to me is all I learn in school if I do not become holy?-- St. Francis DeSales
Now, don’t use this as an excuse to slack off in school! Instead, it should inspire you. What is the purpose of your life? To join God in Heaven---and everyone in heaven is a “saint”. Our 8th Grade CCD teacher will sometimes put up a comparison on the chalk board concerning the value of various endeavors. School, job, money, vacations….all are temporary. Prayer, Mass, living a good life….those are all eternal. Which lasts longer? J
You can be the smartest man in the world, but if you don’t live with God, where are you going to end up? And I doubt the devil will be impressed by how smart you are.
To use another example, former president Bill Clinton is a lot “smarter” then Mother Teresa ever was. Who made more of a positive impact on the world?
Use your learning as a way to become holier and you’ll change the world…and stay on the road to Heaven as well.

Hey All—

Saw a report on Monday that some 65,000 people have already registered for World Youth Day in Australia next summer. And registration has only been open for 50 days so far!

Here is what Pope Benedict had to say to youth in the Philippines…the same could be said to all of us!
New Apostles Sorely Needed, Says PontiffIn Message for Philippines' Youth Day (Zenit.org).- The world urgently needs new apostles anchored in Christ and in his Word, Benedict XVI says in a message heard by more than 10,000 Philippine youths. In his message, read by the apostolic nuncio, Archbishop Fernando Filoni, the Pope reminded youth of the "urgent need for the emergence of a new generation of apostles anchored firmly in the Word of Christ, capable of responding to the challenges of our times and prepared to spread the Gospel far and wide." The AsiaNews agency of the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions published the Holy Father's words. He appealed to young people to "testify to the light of Christ, the shining beacon for our life's journey" and to "become familiar with the Bible, one's compass pointing out the road to follow." "By reading [the Bible], one will know Christ. Reading, studying and meditating on the Word should then flow into a life of consistent fidelity to Christ and his teachings," he said. ZE06111403

Many of you got Bibles for your Confirmation….don’t let it collect dust! During this time of year, you may want to read the Acts of the Apostles—the story of the early Church. It’s an enjoyable, interesting, and historical work of just what happened after Jesus’ Resurrection.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Intentions:
-Some of you may remember Will Goodman from your Confirmation Retreat. He’s involved in all sorts of pro-life activities around the country and belongs to St. Peter’s Parish. He’s leaving for Poland to speak at an International Conference in defense of life there. Please keep him in your prayers!
-For all marriages, that divorce may never happen.
-For all victims of violence.
-For peace in the world and an end to terrorism.
-For all the other intentions you hold in your hearts, we pray to the Lord.
Lord, hear our prayer.

Hey All—

I received a question about Ouija boards from one of our teens. I can’t say this strongly enough…Don’t mess with them. Below is my reply to this teen.

Don't mess with Ouija boards. In fact, I wouldn't even watch others play it. The devil and demons can use such "games" to get at a person. In fact, exorcists will tell you that is one way that people end up getting possessed.

For the formal answer you can look at #2116 & 2117 in the Catechism of the Catholic Church:
2116 All forms of divination are to be rejected: recourse to Satan or demons, conjuring up the dead or other practices falsely supposed to "unveil" the future. Consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens and lots, the phenomena of clairvoyance, and recourse to mediums all conceal a desire for power over time, history, and, in the last analysis, other human beings, as well as a wish to conciliate hidden powers. They contradict the honor, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone. 2117 All practices of magic or sorcery, by which one attempts to tame occult powers, so as to place them at one's service and have a supernatural power over others - even if this were for the sake of restoring their health - are gravely contrary to the virtue of religion. These practices are even more to be condemned when accompanied by the intention of harming someone, or when they have recourse to the intervention of demons. Wearing charms is also reprehensible. Spiritism often implies divination or magical practices; the Church for her part warns the faithful against it. Recourse to so-called traditional cures does not justify either the invocation of evil powers or the exploitation of another's credulity. So I'd stay away from it personally and tell your friends to do the same.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Intentions:
-For all those looking for work, especially on this the Feast of St. Joseph.
-For all immigrants.
-For all victims of violence.
-For peace in the world and an end to terrorism.
-For all the other intentions you hold in your hearts, we pray to the Lord.
Lord, hear our prayer.
