Much has been made of the new vaccine to prevent cervical cancer, Gardasil and having it offered to teenage girls (or younger). Of course, we should do everything we can to prevent anyone from receiving cancer. Unfortunately, a few details have been lost in all the promotions.
One of your peers, Kristine, wrote a letter to the editor to the Stevens Point Journal—I really enjoyed her letter, especially her ending.
“I am a sophomore at SPASH and believe that Gardasil shouldn’t be necessary. I keep hearing a lot of talk about how it’s controversial because people are discussing when the right time is to give it to kids.
Why should we have to give it to kids at all? If parents teach kids good morals throughout their life, they should know that having sex and/or having sex with multiple partners will lead to consequences they may not want. As we grow up we are continually being taught to take responsibility for our actions. So, why are we giving irresponsible people a ‘get our of jail free’ card? Teens and some young adults need to learn what their consequences will be for committing incautious behavior. Cancer caused by reckless behavior is caused by that person and taxpayers should not have to bear the burden.
I’m sick of hearing commercials that claim you will be ‘one less’ cancer victim if you take Gardasil; you can be one less by simply controlling yourself.”

There are lots of resources containing more info on Gardasil. Of particular interest was this via a good group called Judicial Watch on some of the effects of the vaccine…the stuff they don’t tell you:
Washington, DC) -- Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption, today released documents obtained from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act, detailing 1,637 reports of adverse reactions to the vaccination for human papillomavirus (HPV), Gardasil. Three deaths were related to the vaccine. One physician’s assistant reported that a female patient “died of a blood clot three hours after getting the Gardasil vaccine.” Two other reports, on girls 12 and 19, reported deaths relating to heart problems and/or blood clotting.
As of May 11, 2007, the 1,637 adverse vaccination reactions reported to the FDA via the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) included 371 serious reactions. Of the 42 women who received the vaccine while pregnant, 18 experienced side effects ranging from spontaneous abortion to fetal abnormities.
Of course, most companies and especially Planned Parenthood, don’t believe teens can control themselves—hence they must be “protected.” Thankfully, God and many of us, have much higher opinions of you all!
